Abstract

A popular class of extensions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics are the SO(10)-based grand unified models. Apart from reproducing the known fermion observables such as masses and mixing parameters, the SO(10) framework can naturally supply mechanisms for two major shortcomings of the SM, namely the origin of neutrino masses and the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. We investigate to what extent SO(10) is able to simultaneously reproduce the known parameters of the SM while providing answers to these outstanding questions. In the process, we will find limitations of such models, as well as which mechanisms are favoured by these models.
