Abstract

GEANT4 is a physics simulation framework that was originally developed for high energy physics experiments but can also be used for medical applications, such as proton therapy. In the clinical practice of radiation therapy the treatment planning systems usually compute the doses with fast (semi)analytical methods. With detailed simulations based on GEANT4 (and tools based on GEANT4, such as TOPAS and GATE) we would like to do verification studies of those methods (or estimate their systematic deviations), and also to study various strategies in proton therapy for dealing with patient movement (e.g. due to breathing, when a tumour is close to the lungs).
