Abstract

At Umeå center for Functional Brain Imaging we perform several interventions in which we use multimodal imaging to study neural plasticity across the lifespan in both healthy participants and patient groups. One examples of a project is PHIBRA, in which we use both PET/CT and MRI (structural and functional) to assess the effects exercise has on D2 dopamine receptor availability and the relation to cognitive functions. Another project is RECO, which is a randomized controlled trial on patients with burnout syndrome. Here the intervention is either cardiovascular exercise or cognitive training, and we investigate the effects on functional brain response using fMRI. Analysis of brain imaging data is very time consuming and requires powerful computing resources in order to segment brain images accurately. In all projects related to interventions we analyze both structural and functional imaging data from at least two data collection time points. Therefore the use of the Abisko super computer would be extremely valuable for all intervention related projects. The use of a regular computer would take years to analyze the data from our interventions.
