The division of material and computational mechanics, at the Department of Applied mechanics, carries out advanced mechanics based research. In particular, the research of the division is oriented towards the advancement of conceptual ideas of multi-scale modeling in various research areas and computational failure mechanics. The research relates to the development of the finite element technology itself - like adaptivity in space and time for material- and/or structural mechanical problems. The multi-scale mechanic based modeling also strongly related to the other disciplines like machining modeling, interface modeling, atomistic continuum modeling and composite mechanics, where influence of micro-scales are accounted for. These activities are generally very computationally demanding and requires advanced hardware as well as software support.
