Abstract

Wind turbines are sensitive to cold climate due to the risk of ice accretion. Small to moderate amounts of ice will influence the aerodynamics of the turbine blade, decreasing the power production. For high amounts of ice the turbine will be stopped not to endanger the structural integrity of it. The objective of this study is to study the ice accretion on several airfoil shapes using numerical simulations. The results from the ice accretion models are to be compared to each other wind tunnel experiments. In the study we will use both OpenFOAM and an in-house CFD software.
