Wood submerged in water is slowly degraded by erosion bacteria. This process destroy archeological wood such as ship wrecks as well as construction units, such as poles. At present, the taxonomic identity and metabolic pathways of erosion bacteria are unknown. This is a pilot project to test the utility of metagenomics methods in studying erosion bacteria. We will perform 16S amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenome sequencing of several wood samples subjected to bacterial attack and apply taxonomic and functional profiling analyses.
