Abstract

We develop the LUMIA regional atmospheric inversion system, which is used to quantify surface CO2 fluxes (vegetation-atmosphere carbon exchanges, and/or fossil fuel CO2 emissions) over Europe, with a particular focus on Northern Europe. The inversion system relies on input from two atmospheric transport models: TM5-4DVAR (low-resolution, global model, which provide background information) and FLEXPART (high-resolution, regional model). The development phase of the LUMIA algorithm is reaching its end, and we already started/will soon start using the model for science activities within several research projects (EUROCOM, ETrans (eSSENCE), VERIFY), as well as in internal collaborations within our department. This SNIC project will mainly be used to perform the TM5 simulations (TM5 is already running on triolith), as well as to explore better ways to parallelize the FLEXPART simulations.
