Abstract

In this project, the material distribution approach is used to optimize the topology of microwave components, such as antennas and transmission lines. In particular, this approach seeks the distribution of a material in a specified domain in order to optimize the performance of such components. The design problem is formulated as an optimization problem that relies on numerical solutions to the 3D Maxwell’s equations by using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, which is parallelized to run on graphics processing units (GPUs). In addition, a gradient-based optimization method is used to solve the formulated optimization problem.
