Abstract

This project addresses the processes shaping genome-wide variation at various levels in pinnipeds. Pinnipeds are a group of marine mammals including seals, sea lion and the walrus, many of which are currently classified as endangered or vulnerable by the IUCN. In addition to basic research questions the project is thus expected to contribute to conservation aspects. Questions addressed in this project are the evolutionary processes acting during ecological speciation, the impact of climatic oscillations on effective population size and demographic history and the influence of mating system on genetic variation. Methodologically the project involves genome assembly, genome annotation and population genomic analyses using whole genome re-sequencing data and ddRAD data.
