Abstract

The aim of my PhD research is to investigate and provide new perspective on the aspects of the prehistory of Scandinavia and southern Africa using the latest ancient DNA methodologies of extracting DNA and sequence data analysis. For Scandinavia, I focus on the island of Gotland and the period of coexistence between the last hunter gatherer community on the island and a Scandinavian variant community of the Corded Ware Culture. With regards to South Africa, I study samples spanning from before the first of three major migrations to the south to just before the very last migration in order to understand the genetic landscape and how this changed with subsequent admixture from these events.
