Abstract

P. canceri is a intracellular microbial eukaryote which infects aquatic invertebrates (e.g. crabs, oysters, mussels). Based on the finding that its closest relative Mikrocytos mackini seems to have adapted to the parasitic life style by reducing the mitochondria to mitosomes, we hypothesise that P. canceri is adopting the same life strategy. In this study we investigate this hypothesis by searching the transcriptome and genome for genetic evidence of a mitochondrion-related organelle.
