The research group called Vehicle Aerodynamic Laboratory at the Department of Applied Mechanics at Chalmers is using numerical simulations for prediction of flows around ground vehicles (such as trains, cars, trucks and buses) but also for improvement of the aerodynamic performance of vehicles using shape optimization or flow control. The research group is well known for its unique activity in particular using time-dependent numerical simulations of turbulent flows. There are at the moment five main activities within our research group:
1. Numerical simulations for flow control. This study aims to understand the
ow control mechanisms and improve the aerodynamic performance of transport vehicles.
2. Numerical simulations for a better understanding of vehicles stability due to atmospheric conditions, or geometrical features.
3. Numerical simulations for the prediction of ice formation in high-speed train bogies.
4. The aeroacoustic impact of high-speed train in residential areas.
5. Development and validation of the state of the art partially averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS) turbulence model.
Large part of our activity is within Chalmers Area of Advance Transport where we are working both with aerodynamic stability within excellence profile Traffic Safety but also with drag reduction within excellence profile Sustainable Vehicle and Fuels.
The present application focuses on the work in flow prediction, flow control, aeroacoustics and aerodynamic stability of vehicles.
