This project aims to investigate the soft fibre networks using the particle-based method - Discrete Element Method (DEM). In this project, the micro mechanical deformation behaviour (in-plane tensile, ZD compression, creping, shearing under compression) of the fibre network will be investigated for design/redesign of cellulose based fibre products. Typically the fibres are complex in shape with various curl, kink and twist. Therefore linked particles to represent the fibres are appropriate. To mimic the fibre network generation process, the interaction of fibres with the fluids is important. Therefore, another particle-based method i.e. smoothed particle hydrodyamics which will represent the fluid phase might be needed to couple with the DEM.
Such particle-based methods are suitable for parallel computation. Typically, to represent a physical size fibre network and network generation process with solid and fluid phase, a large number of particles are required. Therefore, implementation of parallel computation can save a significant amount of computational effort and time.
