Abstract

The goal of this project is to increase our knowledge of the dispersal patterns, genetic structure and effect of landscape on the establishment of a large carnivore, the Eurasian lynx. After a period of a general increase in population size, the lynx has recently started to naturally recolonize southern Sweden, which was unoccupied by lynx during much of the 20th century. We are using RAD sequencing to to sequence ~1000 Eurasian lynx samples collected over a twenty year period, from which we will assess the population structure and the individual relatedness, to identify the source populations and multi-generational dispersal pathways that are allowing the lynx to establish in central and southern Sweden.
