Glucose (GLUT) transporters play an integral role in the metabolism of monosaccharides. Dysfunction or altered expression of GLUTs is associated with diabetes and severe metabolic disorders. Their high medical relevance makes GLUTs valuable drug targets. However, the molecular basis for sugar specificity is poorly understood, which limits our understanding of their role in human metabolism and their targeting in drug development. This proposal aims to further our efforts to establish the molecular mechanisms GLUT transporters by analyzing their dynamics and their regulation by lipids and extrinsic binding partners using MD simulations. This small allocation will serve as a gateway towards a medium allocation to be submitted soon (see Usage).
