Abstract

Many elderly suffer from fragile bones that breaks easily. This is a disease called osteoporosis. Current diagnostics is based on measurements of bone mineral density a type of x-ray. This is not sufficient. Novel methods include use of finite element analysis of the patients bone to estimate the bone’s resistance to fracture. We aim to improve bone fracture risk assessment, by integrating functional imaging of bone with mechanical modeling of bone strength and prediction of fracture risk. This will be accomplished by combining x-ray imaging, statistical shape modeling, and finite element analysis (FEA).
